SSB BUILDING SERVICES - CHESHIRE CARPENTRY

SSB Building Services were proud to work alongside Kimble Roden on the ground floor transformation of Longhouse Farm, a charming period cottage for our clients, Antonia and Steve. The brief was to improve the flow and functionality of the home while carefully preserving its character and original features.

Design-led construction from day one

The project began with a thoughtful design process led by Emma and Edwina at Kimble Roden. Their approach focused on understanding how the clients used the space while ensuring the new layout remained sympathetic to the age and heritage of the cottage.

Long, flowing hallways were introduced to improve circulation and visual connections between rooms. From a construction perspective, this involved careful structural alterations while protecting the original fabric of the building. Existing timber beams were retained and celebrated, becoming central features that anchor the new layout in the cottage’s history.

Extension and open-plan living

To support modern family living, a small side extension was constructed to relocate the kitchen, dining, and living area. This allowed the new open-plan space to sit adjacent to the sheltered side terrace, strengthening the connection between the house and the garden.

The extension was carefully integrated into the original structure, with close attention paid to proportions, materials, and detailing to ensure it felt like a natural evolution of the cottage rather than a bolt-on addition.

Craftsmanship in the details

Inside, the project is defined by strong material choices and high-quality finishes. As builders, precision and craftsmanship were essential to delivering these features successfully.

A hand-finished exposed brick wall adds texture and warmth to the kitchen, while a slatted oak ceiling introduces a contemporary rhythm that complements the existing timber beams. These elements now act as focal points within the open-plan space, blending traditional character with modern design.

Collaborative build phase delivery

Throughout the build phase, collaboration between SSB Building Services and Kimble Roden was key to the project’s success. Emma remained closely involved on site, ensuring the design intent was carried through during construction and that decisions were made efficiently as the project progressed.

Our role was to manage the construction programme, coordinate trades, and deliver the project on time and within budget—without compromising on build quality. This joined-up approach allowed the build to progress smoothly from structural works through to final finishes.

A home that respects the past and supports modern living

The completed ground floor now feels open, connected, and purposeful. Original features sit comfortably alongside contemporary additions, creating a home that respects its heritage while fully supporting modern living.

The result is a carefully balanced renovation that enhances the cottage’s character while providing a practical and welcoming layout tailored to the clients’ needs.

Client feedback

Scott has just completed a major renovation of our downstairs. He and his team have been a pleasure to work with. They are reliable, professional and competitive with pricing. Throughout the work we were kept up to date and Scott made sure at all times he was available on site. I would not hesitate to use Scott again. Many thanks, we are delighted!

“We have just completed a large renovation of the downstairs of our house. Kimble Roden Architects have been fabulous throughout. The initial design involving Emma and Edwina was exciting, stylish and sensitive to the old features in our home. During the build phase Emma was superb, organised, effective and really led our team of excellent builders. The build has been delivered on time and on budget. I would not hesitate to recommend Kimble Roden Architects.”
